  Orange Bluet
            Enallagma signatum (Hagen, 1861)

Range & Habitat:

Recorded throughout the state, common at a variety of small ponds, lakes and rivers with exposed vegetation.

Since it seems to have a fairly high tolerance for low water quality, it probably should be expected in the counties where it is "missing"

Description:

A medium sized orange and black damselfly, the females range from pale yellow to almost the color of the males. Compare females with Vesper Bluet and Scarlet Bluet.  Young are blue (see thumbnail) and resemble many "blue" Bluets, the thoracic and abdomen pattern must be examined carefully.

 

Conservation Status:

State: S5 - Demonstrably secure in the state

Global: G5 - Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
