Range & Habitat:

Local in proper habitat throughout much of the state.

Ponds and lakes with lily pads, or occasionally other emergent vegetation.

Description:

Often perches on lily pads with tip of tail bent down, resting on the pad.

Males can be confused with Skimming Bluets which show a similar abdominal pattern and frequently perch on floating vegetation.

Females occur in several color forms which usually show black middorsal and humeral stripes, compare with female Rambur's Forktail and Citrine Forktail, neither of which is normally found in the same habitat.

 

 

Conservation Status:

State: S4S5 - Apparently to demonstrably secure in New Jersey

Global: G5 - Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
