  Rambur's Forktail
            Ischnura ramburii (Selys, 1850)

Range & Habitat:

Occurs throughout the coastal plain.

Found along pond edges and wet meadows, including coastal brackish ponds.

Description:

Green and black thorax with blue postocular spots and yellow laterally on the abdomen.  Typically S8 is all blue, and S9 and S10 are black dorsally,

Eastern Forktail has a different pattern at the tip of the abdomen, lacks the ventral yellow or orange and has green postocular spots. 

Females occur in three color phases, a red or orange form, an olive form, and a form closely resembling the male.

 

Conservation Status:

State: S4 - Apparently secure in New Jersey

Global: G5 - Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
