  Band-winged Meadowhawk
            Sympetrum semicinctum (Say, 1839)

Range & Habitat:

Recorded from the northern 1/2 of the state and isolated locations in the south.

Usually found near marshy areas in or near woodlands; it is one of our less common meadowhawks.

Description:

Recognized by the brown band extending about halfway out the hindwing, with a variable amount of brown on the forewing as well.  Caution: some other meadowhawks may show orange at the base of the wing but it seldom forms the well defined band seen here.

 

Conservation Status:

State: S3S4 - Apparently secure but should be watched

Global: G5 - Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
