Description:

Formerly called Red-waisted Whiteface.y

Mature males are black with pruinose white on the top of the abdomen and usually some dark red between the wings.  They resemble a large gangly version of Frosted Whiteface.  The red form, which closely resembles Crimson-ringed Whiteface, has not been recorded in New Jersey to our knowledge.

Females may be recognizable if they develop pruinosity similar to the males.  Otherwise they closely resemble Crimson-ringed Whiteface with a row of narrow yellow or red spots on S1-S7.

Conservation Status:

State: S1S2 - Imperiled to critically imperiled in New Jersey

Global: G5 - Secure globally, but possibly rare in parts of its range
